A stroll down La Rambla - 1/21/2009

La Rambla is a gorgeous tree-lined avenue running from the Placa de Catalunya, Barcelona's main square, down to the statue of Columbus, which famously points to the east. La Rambla can be considered a series of shorter streets, each differently named, and one will frequently see the plural form, Las Ramblas, used for that reason. You can buy birds, flowers, souvenirs, enjoy the outrageously dressed "human statues" or stop for paella and wine, which we did, needless to say. There is a huge indoor market which sells every kind of grocery item imaginable. Picasso's Museum (which contains mostly earlier works) and the city's main cathedral are just a few blocks away in the heart of the Gothic Quarter or Barri Gotic, as the Catalans say. Spanish poet Federico García Lorca once said that La Rambla was "the only street in the world which I wish would never end." This is an ultra-cool walk not to be missed if you ever get to Barcelona.
