Sagrada Familia - 1/21/2009

We wanted to start our tour in Barcelona with a full dose of Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish Catalan architect who belonged to the Modernist style (Art Nouveau) movement and is best known for his unique and highly individualistic designs. The original plans for Sagrada Familia called for a run-of-the mill neo-Gothic cathedral, but Gaudi changed that as soon as he took over the project in 1883. He was still a young man then and this became his most famous, most ambitious and still unfinished life's work. It is scheduled for completion in 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. This cathedral is unique in the world. People either love it or hate it. We loved it. Locals seem to take it for granted, simply walking by and never looking up at it. We can't imagine EVER doing that, no matter how many times we walked by.
